Keep on the Shadowfell

Post  Dungeonmaster on Thu May 24, 2012 11:15 pm

Greetings brave adventurers,

I am preparing a grand adventure of our lifetimes, a game of 4e dungions and dragons to be played in the play by post format. What is play by post you ask? You simply will post all of your characters speech and combat actions throughout the game in this very forum. It moves slowly, but at least we get to play. A game board with icons is posted each round by me your dungeonmaster. It will take a little getting used to but I think it could be a quite fun format. So before we concern ourselves with the running of the game we need to take care of the characters.

So the first thing is character creation, if you desire you can pay for the dnd insider subscription, which will let you make a character using any rules from any of the books you want. If any of you don't want to pay for this let me know. I have the players hand book 1 and 2 and will give you all the info you need to make a decision and scan any pages you need to read. As well as the crunchy part of the character I would like you to come up with a short backstory on who your character is. I also need to know your characters relation to Douven Stahl. A brave adventurer who has gone missing and whose dissapearance has drawn you to the town of Winterhaven. Send me the character sheets in pdf or whatever format you want when you are done. We will then get down to how playing this is going to work out.

World Info

Meet the village of Winterhaven, population 1977. At the end of the old King's Road, this tiny little walled hamlet sits atop a broad hill, nestled in the southern foothills of the Cairngorm Peaks. The walls are weathered stone topped by defensive palisades, which are patrolled often by the modest Winterhaven Regulars.

Small thatched homes stand around Winterhaven, each fronting a small piece of farmland or pasture. Beyond the farms to the west and south lie dark woods, and to the north, tall mountain peaks.

Most residents of Winterhaven have never traveled beyond the village vale. They are farmers, simple craftspeople, and a few mysterious characters whose motives aren't entirely clear. Wagons sometimes head east to trade with the next village, five days away, but that is the extent of the town's export. Once each week, a wagon arrives in the Market Square to trade exotic goods to the townspeople, who are always enamoured with the curiosities they find.

The Story Thus Far

Prologue: On the Road to Winterhaven

The adventurers travel on foot to Winterhaven. After various low-risk encounters, they have happened upon a crested ring that belongs to the lord of a nearby town. They eventually decide to bring the ring back to the lord, in hopes of either a reward or a contract for work that will finally test the group's meddle. Although not knowing how Lord Padraig will react to being reunited with his precious property, they still find themselves in high spirits. The sun is shining high in the sky, and a cool breeze works its way in between the gaps in clothing and armor, making for a calm, comfortable journey.

The town of Winterhaven peeks its profile over the rolling hills in the distance.

You have been travelling for 3 days from the city of Waterdeep eastward towards the small town of Winterhaven. Having met on the road you soon realized that all of you seem to seek the same man Douvan Stahl, who has gone missing. Though your reasons are radically different you are all greatly driven to this task. It has been a quiet 3 days of travel along a dusty road. The days are warm, but the nights you can feel the cold touch of a approaching winter.

The wind in your face is cool and comfortable. The road beneath your feet is level. An occasional ancient cobblestone peeks through the dirt road, indicating decades of neglect. You notice footprints leading up and down the road, many of which were made by small clawed feet.

Stealth Check 7 vs Passive Perception

Spoiler:
You see a reptilian like tail sticking out from behind a rock. Whoever it belongs to appears to think he is quite well hidden.

It had been the longest journey of Aviens life, so far. While he had undergone strenuous training growing up at his home temple, the diet of travel rations and long days spent walking had hardened the body and worn away what little fat Avien had carried beneath his scale layers. He had woefully found that without maintaining proper care of them, his scales would lose their lustre and in extreme cases even fall off! He had however used some of the worn off scales to create a protective cover for his gold purse, which he was genuinely pleased with. The temple plate armour had lost its metallic sheen to the roadside dust, yet Avien always made sure to maintain and inspect his war hammer and shield for defects.

As of yet the travelling had been boring to him, the initial rush of leaving the temple on a grand adventure to save Uncle Douven had long since faded along the road, and what's worse was that some of the others he had met within the caravan seemed to dislike Uncle Douven! All of Aviens memories could be represented with the image of Douvens kindly smile each time he greeted the young Dragonkin during his visits.

As they, the caravan, began nearing Waterdeep and the oddly reptilian tail was blatantly exposed from behind the rock, Avien promptly unhooked the noose holding his warhammer in place and adjusted his shield strap from his back to his arm in anticipation and drilled response to a possible raider company. After all, as head Cleric Timothy would always say "Those who don't draw won't see new winters thaw!"

Avien takes a ready action to attack an incoming enemy party

It had been a long walk... and Gutwrench was feeling a little restless. The hiding creature, and Avien's obviously on edge attitude might provide a little respite from the boredom.

"Watch this, paladin... might be good for a chuckle."

With a wink, a ferociously loud scream emanates from behind the hiding creature: "RUUUUN!"

Standard Action: Gutwrench uses Ghost Sound on the hiding creature.

With a loud yelp a kobold wielding a shortspear jumps out from behind the boulder screaming "IT'S GOT ME, IT'S GOT ME". You hear multiple voices as the heads of several kobolds pop up from behind the scattered rocks around the road to see what the commotion is about.

Taken aback by the casting of Gutwrench`s false scream, the muscles of his powerful legs constrict into a defensive crouch, slowing his ability to attack. Attempting to play off his obvious shock, our scaled paladin looks backwards, noting the positioning of his allies, and the odd eagerness obviously malcontained within the gnomes tiny frame. "I have a name, we've travelled together for miles, use it. Oh, by the way, first one is yours!"

Waving his warhammer in a motioning gesture, Avien shys slightly to the side despite his bulk, turning his torso without actually exchanging any amount of distance, offering clear view of the first kobold to reveal itself from behind the rocks.

I'm not sure how to link my rolls, although I rolled a three -_-

Kobold Brigands: Round One

Realizing that suprise is lost to them the kobolds jump up from their hiding places. You hear sharp cries as you see just over half a dozen kobolds come out of their hiding places. TheIR rust coloured scales shine in the high noontime sun. They all brandish weapons at you, most armed with simple wooden spears, though some of them are armed with what appear to be steel shortswords and oneappears to be unarmed. One of the kobolds wielding a shortswords yells out

"Hehehe kill the travelers, we will take them back to Irontooth, he will be much pleased with such an array of meats!"

With that the kobolds charge, but having broken the sense of suprise the party stands ready. They all rush to prepare to meet the enemy except for Avien, in his excitement for battle he tripped over a old worn down flagstone in the middle of the road, falling behind the others.

Spoiler:

Notes
Illumination: Bright Light
Boulders: provide cover(+4 AC) if they are in your line of sight. Boulders are 5 feet high. Climing onto a boulder requires a DC 15 Athletics check and costs 20feet of movement. A character ontop of a boulder can move to another boulder as if moving on difficult terrain.
Foilage: (The thick green grass) Provide normal cover for those attacking from or into the area, they are difficult terrain.

SUPER SPECIAL NOTE

The Kobolds all have an ability called Shifty it is a once per round immediate interupt if you end a move in an adjacent square they will shift backward one square. This means that you can not do a normal move +attack. You can charge, as they then shift after you hit. Or you can have someone else move in and hit them after they first shifted.

As the Kobolds reveal themselves to attack, Xavier switches on.

Springing forward into action wielding a dagger and a shuriken, Xavier whips his cloak with a flourish and out flies a shuriken at the nearest Kobold. The shuriken speeds through the air and before the kobold can blink the shuriken buries deep into his neck. With a gurgle the kobold falls flat on his back, blood spraying from his artery.

Gutwrench feels the sting of the kobold's weapons... but their words enrage him even more. With a scowl, he draws his dagger and raises it to the sky. From his diminutive hands sprout enormous spectral claws, cruel and sharp. Gutwrench stretches both arms back and swings them forward with as much force as he can muster.
"I'll show you an appetizer!"

Tearing Claws vs Reflex (Dragonshields): 2#1d20+3 20 4 One hit!
1d10+6 8 8 damage!

The claws tear into one of their targets sending him sprawling backward, but pass harmlessly through the other.

Gutwrench takes a small hop away from the remaining kobold and turns to Avien.
"Look, dragon man! I left one for you!"

Standard: cast Tearing Claws (shift Kobold@G6 to H5)

Move: Shift 5 feet to E8

Alzor staying behind his new comrades re-positions himself to gain a clear shoot at one of the Kobolds. Alzor then raised his hand and pointed a finger at the Kobold. Upon muttering a few words a silvery bolt emerges from the finger towards the enemy.
With great precision it hits the Kobold killing it. Seeing his foe dead Alzor removes his staff from his back and clears his mind for what ever comes next.

Re: Keep on the Shadowfell

Post  Avien Flightsthane on Thu Jul 05, 2012 7:31 am

Avien allowed a low, menacing growl to pass from his closed mouth. Frustrated at his stumbling efforts to advance upon the enemy within the vanguard of their small party, and thwarted, Avien loped towards the nearest Kobold enemy. Inspired to attempt to follow up his allies seemingly effortless opening kills, and revenge the spilled blood of his companions, however un-fond of certain characters he may be, our dusty scaled paladin roared his aggression while swinging his warhammer in a deadly downwards loop. The hammers descent, apparently obvious enough for even the slow witted Kobold, was unable to properly vent the young draco-ladin's frustration and using the momentum of his swing, turned on his heel. Using his shield to provide slight cover to his exposed left side, Avien quickly mouthed a short prayer to the Red Knight, and in response a golden crimson rimmed shield took shape before the ferocious gnome, bathing his little body in divine light.

Glaring over his shield rim, his already slit pupils contracting in barely contained blood lust, the embarrassed young warrior looks deeply into the Kobolds soul and murmurs "You're mine", his voice dripping with malice.

Party fouls all up ins, First off I realized the side number bar is completely borked, if you count down the side it doesn't make sense. Just bear with till my next turn. Use the already known locations to determine where you are.
Disregard that I suck cocks and such your in an ok place.
TRIPLE HOLD UP, ERIC DID YOU MOVE THE KOBOLD IN G7, HES IN G7 IN ALL THE STAT BLOCKS BEFORE YOU AND G8 IN YOURS, I'M CONFUSED.
Query does your AC bonus ativate on a miss?

Eric: First off the kobold is in G7, you can't occupy his square, I think you meant G8, also you didn't activate the kobolds interupt shifty. When you ended your move in G8 the kobold shifted into a square away from you, you players can choose, but I am calling it H7. Your attack therefore does not hit (unless it can be used as a charge (you then need to say you are charging). So you can either keep your move as is, he shifts to H7 and you do not hit your attack, or you can change it to a charge and roll a basic attack. Please let Eric correct his turn before we move forward.

So yeah Eric is now at G8, the kobold has shifted to H7. Erics attack did not go off due to the shift. The challenge is active however.

Feeling the sting in his side, Xavier moves around Avien and takes cover behind the boulder. If that Kobold wants another shot at him he's going to have to come a bit closer. Eye's back on the dragonshields, he spots a nice gap in the Kobold's armor and let's fly another shuriken with a fluorish.

Sly Fluorish at Dragonshield 2: 1d20+7 22 1d6+6 10

The kobold tries to block the projectile with his shield but he is too slow and it cuts a deep gash in thigh. Xavier smiles at his shot and draws another shuriken.

Move: E8 to I9
Attack: Sly Fluorish hits Kobold Dragonshield 2 for 10 damage
Minor: Draw shuriken

Carric gasps in pain as the kobolds' spears cut into him. Quickly collecting himself he again attacks the kobold in front of him, determined to redeem his moment of clumsiness, and rebuild his affronted spirits.
This time he is more successful; his spear smashes through the kobold's chest killing it almost instantly. His successful strike granting him some temporary strength to continue the fight.

Standard action: Tending Strike against kobold minion at K1
Attack : 1d20+7: 17
1d8+5: 13

Carric gains 3 temporary hit points from his successful tending strike

Kobold Brigands Round 2.5

Spoiler:

The kobolds surrounding Carric though much reduce in numbers continue their assault upon him. Spears flash in the air as they attempt to overwhelm him with their numbers.

"We cant retreat! Irontooth will flay our skin if we dont' bring back some dinner!" The kobold yells, as if that was some sort of war cry, as his spear comes crashing down.

Carric dives backward to avoid the first blow, but is unable to avoid the second kobold as he drives his spear towards Carrics now exposed flank. Carric smiles however, the wound barely touches his flesh as he is protected by nature himself.

Spoiler:
: 2#1d20+4 19 11 A hit! 4 damage!

The Kobold runs towards Avien, as if compelled by his challenge his shield, which appears to be a scale off of an an old dragon raised to protect him he dashes forward and slashes down at Avien. The strike however bounces harmlessly off of Aviens heavy steel armour.

Spoiler:
: 1d20+8 18 A miss!

Weaving behind his ally the other dragonshield raises his sword charging at Gutwrench.

"I will kill you tiny man!"

Spoiler:
: 1d20+8 24 A hit!
: 1d6+3 8 8 damage! YOu are marked!, You are bloodied!

Avien turns to Gutwrench, probally intent on making some witty remark about his ability to defend hiimself, before he gets the chance though a spear crashes into his helmet shattering, interrupint his speech.
Spoiler:

: 1d20+4 24 A Potential Critical Hit,
: 1d20+4 10 Failed confirm! 4 damage
